Get to know the picturesque landscape of mighty forests and natural excesses in the area of the UNESCO Geopark Karawanken, green Pohorje Massif and the valley of Drava river. Here, various crafts developed, some of which are still alive today. One of the more interesting ones, almost extinct crafts, making of gingerbread has been preserved here.
Life in this remote part of Slovenia has never been easy and many earned their living in the mine below Mount Peca. Equipped like real knapsacks – with a helmet, flashlight and topcoats – you will be taken to the very heart of the mine, where the beam of natural light goes out.
Farming and hunting are still well represented in the Slovenian Carinthia and a visit to one of the farms will bring us closer to this life, today and in the past.
Our trip will lead us to the town of Slovenj Gradec, where we will visit the only European gingerbread and candle maker with a tradition from 1757. This will be followed by a reception, presentation of crafts, tasting, viewing of unique masterpieces of honey and honeycomb.
Next we will drive to the entrance to the Peca underground and take a real mining train to the depths of the mountain’s heart, and learn the secrets of mining. After visiting the mine, we will visit the museum collection and learn a lot about the life of miners. Later we will drive to a nearby tourist farm where we will have a tasting of the cured meat products.
With a real tourist train we will take a short trip. During a pleasant ride, we will be able to observe the grazing of fallow deer and mouflon, and we will be able to see a rich collection at the hunting lodge. We will refresh ourselves with a drink and chat with an experienced hunter, who will tell us quite a few of his hunting adventures. With a little luck, we will also be greeted by a young doe, which likes to visit especially the youngest ones.
Will visit Slovenian Carinthia once again… Interesting places and traditions – let’s have more of such trips!
