When the holiday lights in Ljubljana light on, you can really feel the joyful and Christmas spirit around the city. Visitors like to hang out along Ljubljanica river and in many city’s squares, where at this time of the year there are many stalls with unique handicrafts and delicious culinary masterpieces – all to enjoy the authenticity of the Christmas atmosphere in Slovenia. The baroque city scenery invites visitors to shop, wander around and discover new local attractions.
But when the house smells like gingerbreads, we know it is almost Christmas time. In Radovljica, a small medieval town, lying at the foot of Karawanks, smells like Christmas almost all year around. Old city center is a home of a small Gingerbread museum called Lectar museum, where you can take a closer look at how lectar hearts (decorated pastry made from honey dough and heart shaped) are crafted. The city is a real medieval architectural gem and full of Christmas spirit and decorations it becomes a magical venue.
Nearby is the most important shrine of Mary on Slovenian soil, The Basilica of Mary Help of Christians at Brezje. in the church complex it is also a Museum of nativity scenes with the largest collection of nativity scenes in Slovenia. After an organized lunch we also visit the festive Bled and go for a short walk by Bled lake in the light of lanterns.
DAY 1: Charms of Ljubljana in Advent time
We will start an advent trip to the magically decorated Ljubljana in the morning with a 1,5h long tour of the city center. We will walk through the decorated streets and get to know the history of the city. Then we will go for lunch in one of Ljubljana’s inns. In the afternoon we will have time to immerse ourselves in the city’s atmosphere and stroll among Christmas stalls. When dusk falls on the city, we will make our evening even more interesting with a half-hour boat ride. Look around the magically illuminated Ljubljana from the perspective of the heart of the city – Ljubljanica river.
DAY 2: Already smells like holidays
The trip will take us to Brezje, where we will visit the Basilica of Mary Help of Christians and Museum of nativity scenes. After a short drive we will walk around the old town of Radovljica, enter the Lectar museum, where they will introduce us to the tradition of making lectar hearts. Next is lunch and drive to Bled. We will spend some free time strolling around the Christmas fair near Bled lake, then walk along the shore with lanterns and warm up with mulled wine or tea along the way.
I love Advent time, lanterns, gingerbread, mulled wine, singing songs … anything that reminds me of that time. On this trip you could really feel the magical festive spirit at every turn. I highly recommend!
